Text Talk

  • 1 page handout focusing on main ideas and useful strategies - Upload handout to the wiki here.
  • 5-minute mini-lecture (REVIEW key concepts)
  • 10-minute interactive activity that a) demonstrates a suggested strategy, and/or b) reinforces key concepts, and/or c) extends learning from the chapter
  • Grading criteria - timing, preparation, engagement of student

Swap Shop

  • A collection of resources related to discipline-specific literacy instructional strategies and resources. You should post a new-to-you idea under the appropriate category on the wiki page. Keep in mind these guidelines:
    • Each post should include a) a title (in bold), a brief description of the idea (3-4 sentences), a link (if applicable), a source (if applicable), and needed materials (if applicable)
    • To get credit, you are required to sign your post by typing three tildes (~) after the title.
    • Do not post anything that is copyrighted.

      • Read Zwiers, Chapter 1 - Write half-page responses to two of the reflection questions at the end of the chapter. You choose which ones. (It will help if you read the questions before you read the chapter.) Explicitly connect your responses to the chapter. Bring hard copies of your answers (handwritten or typed is fine).
      • Find a challenging, complex, important/engaging text within your discipline. The text should be 5-10 pages and designed for experts in your field. It should be difficult for your peers outside of your major to understand. Bring a copy of the text or a link to class.
